SlideShare Contest

In two weeks, I'm giving a presentation to my team on the difference between value buyers and commodity buyers, how to differentiate between the two and how to use one versus the other as qualifying conditions in the sales cycle. Socialtext offers one of the more expensive solutions in the business social network space. We don't hide from that, but it makes a big difference in the questions that we ask and how we position ourselves. There are BMW buyers and there are Hyundai buyers. Both essentially do the same thing, but the delta in cost between baseline models is 3x. I've never purchased a Hyundai before. I have purchased a BMW and the service and support associated with the purchase was impeccable. Today, I noticed on Guy Kawasaki's blog that he is the judge in a SlideShare contest for the 'Worlds Best Presentation'. I've always been a big fan of the way that people like Guy, Seth Godin and Tim Sanders present and in my presentation, I'm going to try to incorporate as much as I have learned from these guys and others as I can. I'll certainly be entering my presentation into the contest. For those interested, this is one of the winning entries from last year.

Cool Plane People

A couple of weeks ago, Tim Sanders had a really good post about meeting someone unique on the plane. How the experience of meeting someone on a plane is much more rewarding than just tuning out, trying to cram out a few emails in cramped corners, so why not take advantage of it by meeting the person next to you. Last night, flying home from Toronto, I met Craig Breckon, a leader at the American Historic Motorcycle Racing Association. Craig was on his way to San Francisco, after picking up a recent win at Daytona, to pick up a handful of bikes and drive them across the country. I really had a great time talking with Craig, learning about something that I knew absolutely nothing about, motorcycle racing. While I don't see myself ever getting on a bike and living to tell about it, it was great to hear Craig's stories and the passion he has for racing. Great stories shared of crashes and wins and near wins and close calls. It certainly made the flight go faster. More importantly, like Tim, I learned that I don't need to have my head on the laptop or in a book to make a flight enjoyable. Usually the person next to you is pretty interesting. Reach out and say hi.
