Free Like Herpes

Quite often, I'm in an environment where I'm selling against free & very low cost alternatives. I've been thinking a lot about how best to approach the real cost of free and how to translate that into a blog post. At some point, I'll do something a bit more articulate, but Zac Bir's t-shirt today at our Face to Face really summed it up nicely. I don't know enough about GPL to know the details of why people are so down on it. I think that the shirt expressed that, while something may appear free on the surface, in the grand scheme of things, free may end up being a whole lot more expensive. At some point, when it isn't so late, I'll do a longer post on the real cost of free. in the end, you get what you pay for.
